Welcome to the Naperville Elections Website! Our goal with this site is to provide one place for all of Naperville to find information about who is running for office in upcoming elections. All of us care deeply about what happens in our City and our Schools, but our government organization can be confusing and convoluted with many of us in different townships, counties and school districts. It discourages some voters, and we want to help. We truly believe that everyone who can vote should get informed and make an educated choice.
National elections get a lot of press, but local elections touch us most significantly and too few voters turn out for them. Part of the reason for that, we believe, is the inability to find information and wade through the levels of government to find out who is on your own ballot. We hope to help you cut through all that. This is a nonpartisan site and we will always do our best to represent all candidates equally. If you are a candidate and your information is missing, please let us know.
We are not experts - just your concerned neighbors - and we will try to explain the offices as we understand them, but if you feel we are missing something that needs to be understood, please do feel free to let us know that, too. We hope you find this site useful and encourage you to take the time to get informed, get involved, and get out and vote!
Kind Regards,
James Nagy and Susan Steele

The February 2, 2010 election is a Primary election. The offices listed below are all included in this election and the vote is to determine who will be the candidates on the ballot for the general election in November 2010. Basically, this election is to narrow the choices so that we have only one candidate per party on the general election ballot. In this February election you will see many candidates on each portion of the ballot and you will choose who you feel is the best candidate to run for the office in November for that party. The ballot you receive is based on your intention. You can only draw a ballot from one party (e.g. Democrat, Republican) and you will have the opportunity to vote for every office on that ballot. They call that “pulling a ballot” for one party or another. The purpose of this election, again, is for the parties to choose their best candidates to run in the general election, so you have to declare one party or another to cast your vote. That information is recorded and provided as public record. No one will get to see how you voted – in this country that information is always confidential – but they can see which ballot style you pulled. In an uncontested race, there will only be one name on the ballot, but if you wish to vote for that person, it is still a good idea to mark the ballot. It gives the candidate a sense of how many people are likely to vote for them in the general election. Some portions of the ballot may show no candidate at all. This means that there is no one from that party currently running for that position.
Once the primary votes have been cast and counted, the winners from each party will go on to represent the party as the candidate for that office in the November 2010 general election. Other than precinct committeemen (see FAQ), no one will be put into office based on this vote, but it is still important to get to the polls because many candidates will be eliminated from the running. The other benefit to declaring your party and voting in this election is that it gives candidates and local organizations your information and lets them know you are an active voter so that they can reach out with information if they have some – letting you be more informed.
